Blogging to support Autism Speaks

Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Autism impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe.

Currently, there are no effective means to prevent autism, no fully effective treatments, and no cure.

Autism effects every child differently, which means that each case has to be treated differently.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.

Autism Speaks aims to bring the autism community together as one strong voice to urge the government and private sector to listen to our concerns and take action to address this urgent global health crisis. Your donation to Autism Speaks can help to find the missing piece to the puzzle.

My family has been touched by autism and now I am doing my part to try to help bring more awareness and fund research for autism and the people it affects. From 9 a.m. on July 26 until 9 a.m. on July 27 I will be writing a blog entry every thirty minutes. That's right, 24 hours of blogging and 48 total blog entries. My entries will be whatever I feel like writing at that time...poetry, short stories, stories about my life with my kids, anything is possible :) Please check out my blog at http://surreal_prose.livejournal.com to cheer me on, read my blogs and share in the fun of blogathon. Thank you for all of your support!
